Director of Laboratory Animal Facility

This position is a 12-month non-faculty appointment with primary duties to include oversight and operation of the Laboratory Animal Facility and laboratories in the Biomedical Engineering Building, member of university’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) responsible for preparing all reports requested by OLAW, USDA or other government and public entity concerning animal use and facility operation, and safety officer for Biomedical Engineering laboratories. General facility oversight and maintenance of the Biomedical Engineering building consisting of 10,000 ft2 of research space, half dedicated for animal studies, supporting over 14 faculty. Specific Duties include:
- Direct and carry out the activities related to the operation of the Laboratory Animal Facility in the Biomedical Engineering Building, and satellite animal facilities on campus
- Examine the animals once per day, including weekends and holidays
- Communicate with investigators to relay animal health info including breeding updates and growth patterns.
- Monitor animal numbers and facility capacity, as well as animal numbers in regards to approved protocols.
- Monitor Air quality, temperature, humidity of animal facility
- Feed and water animals as needed
- Change bedding, move animals, clean cages, and clean animal facilities weekly
- Order or breed new animals/Order Facility/animal supplies
- Dispose of dead animals properly
- Euthanize animals when required
- Assist faculty, staff, and students in preparing written information, research protocols, and grant applications
- Teach faculty, staff, and students related to safe, humane, and legal vertebrate animal use. Provide public relations information as needed.
- Maintain equipment and conduct animal equipment inventory in the Animal Facility
- Maintain facility budget and process required Facility use Fees.
- Coordinate with outside groups on facility construction and upgrades
- Seeks continuing education such as conferences and online seminars in order to stay updated on current animal regulations and policies.
- Oversee and train student workers in assisting in daily animal care routines.
Coordinate and advise as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and serve as a liaison with government and public entities concerning animal use and facility operation. Responsible for preparing all reports requested by OLAW, USDA, and any other government agency or the University, and to forward to the Institutional Officer as defined by these agencies.
Serve as the safety officer and property control for the Biomedical Engineering Building. Develop and ensure appropriate safety training for all authorized users. Conduct period safety inspections of all laboratory facilities in the Biomedical Engineering Building. Collect annual chemical inventory for submission to University Environmental Health and Safety office.
- Experience with animal care and handling;
- Able to understand, implement and document compliance with federal and state animal use regulations, safety regulations, and risk management regulations;
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
- A B.S. is required (biology-related field preferred).
This position reports to the Associate Vice President for Research and Partnerships (Institutional Officer for IACUC) with daily supervision provided by the Academic Director for Biomedical Engineering.
